Dr. Hunt has over 35 years of experience as a high school and elementary teacher, principal, Director of Curriculum and Executive Director of Staff Development. A graduate of Indiana University (IUP), she completed post-graduate work and earned her Doctorate Degree from the University of Texas. Prior to coming to Clairton, Dr. Hunt has worked for the El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) in El Paso, Texas.
Career highlights include being recognized as one of EPISD’s Top Ten Teachers of the Year and the Region 19 Texas Elementary Principal of the Year. At the state level Dr. Hunt was also selected to serve as a Texas Reading Leader under former Governor George Bush’s Reading Initiative.
Dr. Hunt served as a Principal for almost 20 years, opening a new elementary school that was designated by a National Educational Panel and Redbook Magazine as one of the Best Schools in America, the Best School in Texas. Under her leadership Dr. Nixon Elementary School earned several state and national awards and was selected as a Texas Mentor School to assist other schools in improving student achievement. As Executive Director of Staff Development, Dr. Hunt oversaw the Principal’s Academy, New Teacher Induction Program, and designed, developed and delivered teacher professional development.
Throughout her career Dr. Hunt has had the opportunity to lead the implementation of various school reform models and has devoted the past twelve years studying and implementing the national Standards and Accountability initiative. She is active in various professional organizations serving on the Texas State Board of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and as the local ASCD President. She is a 30 year member of Phi Delta Kappa. Dr. Hunt has presented at numerous state and national conferences and worked as a reading consultant.
Her goals for Clairton are to work collaboratively with the teachers, School Board and community to improve student achievement. She will assist the leadership and instructional teams in the implementation of the new PA Common Core Standards. She will also work to secure funding for programs, resources and professional development that will positively impact teaching and learning.
Dr. Hunt lives with her husband Dennis Hunt, a retired teacher, and enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, Preston and Ethan Hunt.
