WHAT IS THE STUDENT ASSISTANCE

PROGRAM (SAP)?

In Pennsylvania, the Department of Education requires all schools to have a Student Assistance Program.  The Student Assistance Program was designed to assist parents and educators in helping students to achieve a more successful school experience.  The core of SAP is a team of school employees and community agency staff, often called the “core team” or “SAP team.”  This year there are three SAP liaisons from Mon Yough Community Services (MYCS) serving the school district.

A student can be referred to the Team in several different ways.  Some students are referred by a member of the Team, by teachers, or other school personnel.  Parents or students themselves can refer someone that they feel could be having a difficult time in school.  It is important to know the people within your school that are on the SAP/Core Team and ask them for guidance.

The SAP Program will help you find services and assistance within the school first.  If needed, the Team can also help find options within the community.  We do not diagnose nor treat you or your child.  Instead, we provide you with information and resources.  The SAP Team will not become involved until they receive parent/guardian permission.  Our goal is to help your child succeed in school and remove all barriers to learning.
